Mission Statement

The Blind Relief Fund of Philadelphia is a small, non-profit agency devoted to meeting the material, financial and emotional needs of blind Philadelphians, and to improve the quality of their lives.

All of the clients are legally, if not totally, blind, live in Philadelphia, and demonstrate severe financial need.  The fund provides assistance with food, clothing, medication, eyeglasses, canes, sensory aids, rent, utility bills, furniture and appliances, cleaning services and more.  In addition, the Fund provides a few "extras" that make life a bit more enjoyable such as birthday cards, a special gift during the holidays, tickets to area attractions and musical events, and occasional social outings.

At the present time, the Fund is in contact with over 500 of the needy blind of Philadelphia, most of whom are active clients.  Approximately 52% are over the age of 60.

Personal contact is a very important part of the services offered by the Blind Relief Fund.  The Friendly Visitor visits clients in their homes, accompanies them on shopping trips, takes them to the doctor and provides needed assistance.  The Telephone Visitor keeps in touch with all of our clients by telephone.  In addition to monitoring the various needs of the clients, the staff provides emotional support and a friendly ear.  Care is given to insure that the client's self-respect and dignity is always upheld.  The help provided by The Blind Relief Fund helps clients maintain their independence, remain in their own homes and lead productive lives.

As a matter of policy, The Blind Relief Fund has never received or requested funds from any government agency.  The organization is funded completely by private donors and organizations.
